Your City Cousins
My final project for my HIST 5707 Narrativity and Performance Class, "Your City Cousins", was a gallery piece on Victorian homosexual sex work and cruising culture. The intention was to fabulate a missing visual record and to reflect on continuities between cruising culture in the nineteenth century and in the present.
For this project, I had friends pose as archetypes associated with Victorian homosexuality, then composited these with archival photos. I then took these images and created mock-ups of Grindr profiles as if they were written by these men.
For my sources, I drew from monographs such as Matt Cook's "London and the Culture of Homosexuality, 1885-1914" and primary sources such as trial records in the Old Bailey's online archive, the memoirs of John Addington Symonds, and literary erotica from the period such as Jack Saul's "Sins of the Cities of the Plain".
